Here Are Some Important Facts You Need To Know And May Want To Keep In Mind As You Shop For An Epoxy Floor! Buying An Epoxy Paint For Your Floor Is Much More Complicated Than Buying Paint For Your Walls Or Ceilings. If You Don't Know What You're Buying You Will End Up Just Wasting A Lot Of Your Time And Money. So Spending 5 Minutes To Read Through This Section Will Save You Many Hours Or Even Days Of Heartache In The Future.

From selling over 300,000 DIY epoxy kits and millions of gallons of epoxy to military, industrial, commercial and residential users we know that there's lot's of ways to cheaply epoxy paint your floors and very very few ways to do it right so that you'll never have to repaint your floor ever again. Just because it says epoxy paint on the label doesn't mean it's a real epoxy product. Most likely it's a water based Latex or oil based Enamel floor paint with epoxy additives or some form of cheaper hybrid solids epoxy such as a Cycloaliphatic. The main selling factor of these types of epoxies is their low price. There's a reason for their low price and it's not because they have some sort of magic formula.

First, know that no reputable epoxy installation company would ever do a job without acid etching the floor and then topcoating the epoxy with a protective urethane fortified antiwear topcoat, so neither should you! So if a kit you are considering doesn't provide you with at least those two critical steps you should stop right there! Second, if a kit you are considering needs a wait time after mixing before applying it to your floor, that is a sure sign of a low quality imitation epoxy, all high quality epoxies have a short pot life and require being applied to the floor immediately after mixing, if the kit is water based that's another sign of a low quality imitation epoxy. So if you are thinking of buying any epoxy that is under 10 Mils thick, that doesn't require etching of the floor, that doesn't have an antiwear urethane topcoat, needs a wait time after mixing or is water based then you are better off buying an inexpensive conventional Latex or Enamel floor paint and recoating over it every year or so!

Epoxy kits with a low advertised price may seem like a bargain at first but when you compare the numbers you'll see they're really not a bargain! In fact if you take two minutes to study the Epoxy Comparison Chart listed below you'll see that most other companies don't even have specification ratings on their product, if they don't publish performance numbers how do you know what you're buying? You must know what the Abrasion rating is, what the Impact rating is, what the Adhesion rating is and what the Gloss rating is. That is how epoxies are judged by the professionals.

Simply slapping water based or low grade solids epoxies on your floor at less then 10 Mils thick and not using an anti wear protective topcoat is a guaranteed waste of your time and money! Epoxy paints are great for adhering to concrete and other surfaces but it's the urethane fortified topcoats that provide the gloss protection and durability. These specialty type topcoats are more expensive than the epoxy itself. That's why many other brands don't offer them or offer hybrid epoxies claiming not to need a topcoat. Don't be fooled! This is especially true when using decorative chips, it's just common sense if you don't seal in and protect the decorative chips with an anti wear topcoat how can exposed plastic chips withstand tire abrasion! When the chips and finish wear off your floor in a lot shorter time period then you ever imagined, you'll not only be unhappy about the poor appearance of your floor, you'll be real unhappy when you find out that those "lifetime" guarantees only cover peeling and you have to do the floor over at your cost!
